hello to them. first, matt, as you know, we are following a lot of breaking news this morning. that video of a meteorite coming out of russia, absolutely incredible and frightening. >> this is the kind of thing you expect to see in a weird movie. you can see that meteorite as it's burning, as it streaks across the skies. that's over the euro mountains overnight. about 900 miles east of moscow. seconds later you can hear that loud explosion. >> unfortunately there's been some injuries this morning. let's get to duncan this morning in london. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this was up close and big. russia's academy of is russia's sciences said it was ten tons and traveled at3,000 miles an hour. no wonder people were panicking. so streaking across the early morning fire, a burst of light

and an explosion of sound. these unverified pictures show the close shave with a meteorite. locals heard and felt the shock wave of it passing. on the ground, people stunned and unsure of what they had seen were left staring at the thick trail. this man said it lasted three, maybe four seconds. more than 400 are reported injured, many hurt by broken glass. windows popped out and a large part of this factory roof collapsed. this level of damage is rare, but meteorites are common. they're often smaller an burn up as they enter the earth's atmosphere. an asteroid the size of a swimming pool will make the closest recorded pass of earth. closer than some satellites. >> we understand it's going extreme he well and we can say there's no chance of it hitting

the earth. >> reporter: this part of russia, that will be welcome news. some people asking if that asteroid fly-by we're expecting later is somehow linked. scientists say no. they're calling it a cosmic coincidence. savannah? >> thank you. dr. neil degrass-tyson is an astrophysici astrophysicist. >> good morning. >> is there a rare occurrence or just rare that it happened in the populated area and we have the incredible images? >> based on what we have seen in the past this can happen once a decade. in fact in the 1990s there was an air blast that occurred in the air space between india and pakistan. at a sensitive time when they were talking about nuclear armament and knowledge that it

was an air blast helped to diffuse that it was an air strike in progress. perhaps once decade or so. most of earth is water. if this happens over the pacific, no one would see it. >> we'd see it happen in a populated area, had it been a big city like manhattan, right? >> of course. it's a shock wave, basically. the physics of it is it hits the earth's atmosphere and feels like a brick wall to it. because of how fast it is moving. and when you hit a brick wall you basically explode. that's what happened here. exploded in midair. that shock wave shatters glass or anything sort of fragile and breakable over a huge radius. remember the oklahoma city bomb that destroyed the building it hit, but of course much glass was broken in the surrounding area. that's the effect of a shock wave air blast of an explosion of this kind. >> this seems to have come without warning. is this the sort of thing that scientists aren't able to detect in the atmosphere? >> yeah. below a certain size asteroid, they come in without warning. exactly.

above a certain size, a radar can detect them. the military certainly has a smaller threshold for what they can see coming in. by the time you see them coming in, there's no defense against them. something this size is not going to render the human species exstint. something large enough we could. that's what we're focusing on at this moment. >> let me have you weigh in on this, you don't think it has any relation shthe asteroid supposed to brush by earth today? >> yeah, it's going to dip below of the orbits so it's a buzz cut to earth. that will happen so many hours from now. by my read of the dynamics of the solar system, this just happens to be a coincidence. if it were not a coincidence you would see many more of these between now and when that big one comes by. because what happens is you get an asteroid that breaks up from the gravitational stress as it

nears bodies during its life and so the asteroid becomes a train of objects that would then come hit one right after the after. this is so many hours before the next asteroid will hit. it's unlikely. >> all right. thank you for the science lesson this friday. >> we'll survive the day. i promise. >> good to hear that. matt, now back to you. >> words to live by literally. thank you very much. another big story we are covering, the ordeal is over for the passengers aboard that crippled cruise ship in the gulf of mexico. the relief could be seen on their faces as they streamed off overnight. nbc's janet chanly has more on that. >> reporter: good morning. the nightmare is over. it was after midnight when the last person stepped off of the cruise ship. for everything the passengers have been through, tired, hungry in need of a shower, the mood was almost festive. then, very anxious to get home

as quickly as possible. finally, their ship came in. after five days of misery, a night of relief, passengers streaming off the carnival triumph carrying their luggage. tired. hungry, but mostly just happy to be back. >> glad to be on ground, everybody! >> united states, hey, nothing better. >> reporter: greeting loved ones with kisses, smiles and tears of joy. unprepared for temperatures in the 40s, many of the wayward vacationers wore bath robes to keep warm. buses took some to hotels. others opted to drive all night, impatient to get home. meanwhi meanwhile, cell phone images painted an agonizing week they left behind. a tent city set up on the pool deck, makeshift beds everywhere. then the bathroom situation. >> it was like being in a floating porta potty. >> but there was universal

praise for the staff on board. >> they were great. >> reporter: including braise from the boss. >> i want to thank them very much. >> reporter: he apologized again. >> clearly we failed in this particular case. >> reporter: then went on board to apologize directly to passengers. >> i'd like to personally thank you for your patience, understanding and cooperation. >> reporter: but not everyone was in a mood to accept. and for some, their first cruise is their last. >> never again. never with carnival. never again. >> reporter: and at the 7:00 hour in the pacific time zone, you can see the triumph quickly disappearing behind me. it is out of service. however, they are of moving it to a nearby shipyard here in mow peel and that's where it will stay for a couple of months. we have the electric supply truck moving behind us. they'll do the investigation here and refurbishment here. carnival says it will go back in service. matt, back to you. >> janet, thank you. earlier this morning i

talked to triumph passengers julie billings and others and asked them how they're feeling. >> so much better to be back. >> glad to be back. >> have you guys had a chance to take the world's longest, hottest shower yet? >> i did that last night. that was the first thing that we did. i got the kids in the shower and then it was my turn. >> we seemed to miss that. >> you were also traveling with a friend, lorraine and she had a tough experience. she broke her ankle. talk about the circumstances. i know you nursed her for the last couple of days. >> yeah. she took a nasty fall. the ship was dark and they were pushing us with the tug boats and so the ship was moving a lot and jerking and just so happened she got up to use the bathroom at that time and the ship jerked and she couldn't see.

she lost her footing and the paramedics came in from the medical center, they picked her up and her foot was actually just hanging off of her leg. so she's in pretty rough shape right now. >> yeah. i understand she's going to face surgery. you say. i don't want to get too graphic here. in the last several days of the cruise, going to the bathroom amounted to using a bag. talk about your experience again. i'm not looking for the gory details how was rough was it over the last couple of days for the both of you? >> it was -- it was really rough. it was -- >> it was bad. >> it was like post natural disaster, but stuck on a boat with 3,200 other people and those poor workers trying to clean up after everyone and deal with everyone freaking out. >> you know, i'm glad you said that, those poor workers. yeah, because i have heard a lot of praise for the crew of this ship and not only were you as

passengers dealing with difficult conditions, but they were dealing with the same thing and having to care for your needs as well. talk to me about them. >> right. i mean, they literally they're on the same boat. they're in the same boat with all of the same issues that we had to deal with. but they didn't have to just sit around and get through it. they had to work and try to keep everybody as comfortable as possible. clean up after the lack of sewage and it was just horrible working conditions for them. they had to put in extra hours and kept a smile on their face. they were amazing. >> their cabins were in the lower deck, so a lot of them were flooded. so you could walk through the ship and see them sleeping on the tables and on the floor and the hallways. some were sharing mattresses if they could find one that maybe was not so clean that somebody had already tossed because they had been soiled and so they

would stack up blankets and towels that were used to lay on that. they were -- they're amazing. they just smiled and sang and danced and they were awesome. >> well, i think they deserve a lot of congratulations as well. the ceo of carnival has issued an apology. ladies, do you accept the apology, would you cruise again? >> not with carnival. >> not yet. >> not yet. >> not yet. not yet. i accept his apology. i know that it meant a lot for lorraine. he came and he actually carried her luggage to the ambulance last night for her. so that meant a lot. but not yet. >> yeah. it will be tough to get back on a boat. >> that's very, very understandable. we're happy you're on dry land and cleaned up. thanks for taking the time to talk to us, ladies. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> all right. and now here's savannah. >> we are learning more this morning about the murder case against olympic hero oscar

pistorius, the double amputee who made history at the london games was formerly charged in the south african court this morning with the shooting death of his girlfriend. nbc's michelle kaczynski is there for us. good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. oscar pistorius sobbed openly in court, buried his face in his hands as the charge of murder was read against him. prosecutors called this premeditated. his agent just released a statement saying they dispute the alleged murder in the strongest terms and that pistorius sends his deepest sympathies to his girlfriend's family. >> pistorius -- >> reporter: olympian oscar pistorius keeps his head down. now shielding his face from cameras to and from court. the world's press is around him, charged with the murder of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp shot in the head and the body at

pistorius' well-secured home around 4:00 a.m. on thursday. a 9 millimeter again was registered to him. neighbors had heard shouting earlier that night and there had been prior domestic disturbances there, but wouldn't elaborate. he detailed his need for security saying he kept a pistol by his bed, a machine gun and bat as backup. >> he talked about a number of incidents in which he had to get his gun and come downstairs and the next thing i knew he said, hey, do you want to go to the gun range? >> reporter: in 2011, he proudly tweeted his shooting prowess at the gun range. steenkamp, a cover girl, law school grad, soon to be reality show contestant -- >> i'm going home with sort of a sweet taste in my mouth. >> reporter: was set to give a valentine's day talk about empowering women. instead, her heartbroken family spoke about her. >> her future has been cut short and i do say shy' with the angels.

as we get into monday and tuesday, we're really going to drop your temps and bring in showers. it looks like wednesday will see the most moisture come through. >> that's your latest weather. now back to savannah in boston. >> al, thanks. the passengers of that disabled carnival cruise ship may finally be back on dry land this morning. given the conditions on board, some people could face a number of health concerns in the coming days. nbc's chief medical editor nancy snyderman is also in mobile this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the carnival triumph is docked behind me. a lot of people are on dry land. as we talked to people last night and they explained what conditions were, one of the big concerns is that over the next couple of days people may still come down with illnesses just because of what they were exposed to. this is, in essence, a floating petrie dish, if you will. >> what are some of the more

serious conditions they might be subject to, given the circumstances they were facing on that boat? >> because they were exposed to so much raw sewage, the real concern is stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. it can take up to three to five days and sometimes in children up to ten days to exhibit. so although everyone told us they got no instructions from the crew or the people who owned the liners, one thing public health people are saying is that for anyone who experiences any of those symptoms, see your doctor and not self medicate. most of these things are limited but there were young and children and elderly on the boat. some people were taken off in wheelchairs last night and some put into ambulances. it is very important for the young and elderly, who could become very dehydrated. >> i wonder about food poisoning. food was in very short supply. who knows how it was stored. i don't think there was much in

the way of refrigeration on board. is that a concern? >> the refrigeration went early. everyone said milk was not just room temperature, it was warm. so a lot of people stayed away from food products. a lot of people were, interesting, cleaning their own bathrooms, asking for bleach. they were cleaning their own bathrooms because the staff just couldn't get to their own quarters. of course, as we know, a lot of people were sleeping on decks. food poisoning would have hit early, within hours to a couple of days. those people who did get sick were isolated from everyone else on the boat and now the real risk as a delayed infection is the sewage. you're right. double whammy. food exposure first and fecal exposure second. >> a lot for people to deal with. i know a lot of people are happy to be back on dry land. thank you for your information this morning. >> reporter: you bet, savannah. only the top die-hard sports fans. you will not believe some of the

perfect 300 and that's perfectly okay. >> it's as new england as you can get so it is such a tradition here. >> reporter: from the alley to the ice. this is boston common, america's oldest park. of course, if you spend any time in boston you'll wind up on a pair of skates. the park has been here since 1634. the ice rink is relatively new. and for a newcomer like me. >> you know how to walk, right? >> reporter: barely. a helpful guide never herds. bostonians and visitors alike hop onto the frozen pond every chance they get. >> winters are tough up here and so we make the best of it. skating and skiing are two ways. >> you have to keep straight. >> reporter: no two ways about it. >> you're doing okay. he's standing on his feet. not falling backwards. side to side. >> reporter: the bruins won't be calling. now a lot of cities think it, but boston is at the center of the world.

what we're going to do with this. >> i'm just slicing. >> put this in the order they're going to cook. clams are first. >> no cream in this? >> no cream. >> tomato based. >> it's a dish from italy, strong italian population in boston right by the north end. this has some local clams, mussels, shrimp. i'll ask you to take that tomato and put that right in here. >> just pour it all in? >> most of it. about three-quarters of that. i'm going to give you this back, matt, if you don't mind. >> what is this, tomato sauce? >> pureed italian tomatoes or canned. it's cold here. we don't always have the best weather to grow tomatoes. canned tomatoes are always consistent. >> a dash of everything? >> good pinch. always season it later if you want. rosemary and thyme in here. if there's something you don't like or you can't get locally, substitute whatever you want. what's nice about this is putting the local cod in, it

thinkens the sauce as it cobbings. beautiful local bread. we have a red flannel hash. >> what is that? >> it's an interesting idea. red and gold beets, potatoes. this was a way to utilize last night's corn beef and cabbage. i tried to rup update it by not cooking it to death. i did homemade pastrami to give it some spice. so this cooks for about -- each dish, each component of it, a minute or two until it starts to open up. you don't want the clams and mussels to cook forever. they sort of shrink up then and get tough. you just want them to open up until it looks like this. beautiful shellfish stew. >> that's beautiful. >> served with beautiful grilled bread. >> you grill your bread. >> or put ton the bottom and it

weekends. >> spark start. >> that's what he said, look, he was working a day job but at night -- >> sales. >> he was working on his novel. and, obviously -- >> i want to say to everybody, at the end of the show, make a decision right now that whatever you take away from this show, your body, love life, that you're going to do t it has to start with i'm doing it. that's it. everything else is mumbo jumbo. make that decision now before you watch the rest of the show. >> appearance, your love life, your style, all that is going to come up throughout this hour. take two, the art of reinvention. speaking of reinventing yourself, a couple of famous names who have done that recently, ben affleck, showered with awards for directing "argo." i think he called it the 2003 year. >> phase. >> where he was with j.lo, in the tabloids every week, came out with a bunch of movies that were bombs. and he said to himself, i'm going to step out of this life. he said i'm not going to act anymore. i'm going to focus on directing. a classic move of reinvention. it's worked out great for him.

>> the town just put him on the map as a director. >> and a couple of other movies. "argo" most recently. some are saying he is the hottest director to work with in hollywood. he had a skill set but perhaps needed some failure in his life to make him go after that dream. >> by the way, not a slacker in the acting category. >> no. >> great example, though, of taking a competency -- not straying completely away from it. let's say somebody at home is a bank teller and they're bored with it and they want to start to do party planning. it seems different but you're dealing with people all day long. you have your people skills. i guarantee you can find anything in what you're doing now that can have a shade of what you want -- take affleck. directing? no, he wasn't a director, but he was around it. >> we've got a little bit of his speech. go he got this award for directing bafta. this is a second act for me.

you've given me that. this industry has given me that. i'm so grateful and proud and i just want to dedicate this anyone else out there who's trying to get their second act. you can do it. another actor, nicholas sparks, and another author who wrote "the fifty shades of grey" she said it was her mid-life crisis writ large. she just started writing steamy book. >> whoa all know what happened next, starting the 2012 craze, a top-selling book. >> based on donny deutsch. >> his love life. >> 65 million copies of this book. >> unbelievable. >> pretty good mid life crisis. >> we should all be so lucky, right? take three, we've all been through this. >> we have been. >> in one form or another. professional or permanently? >> just getting started in this field in journalism. coming out of school, i couldn't find a job that actually paid me a salary. i was recruited by a bank at the

time, was in a management training program. i was in finance for two years, thought i completely left my dream behind. >> look at this. wait a minute now. >> but then i kind of kept going. i persevered, got a job at court tv and then finally that led to news 12 the bronx. that was my first on-air gig. >> the old -- >> look at that. >> kerchief. >> i was a flight attendant. >> hiding a hickey or something? >> oh, nice. >> somewhere -- really? you were mr. smooth back -- >> just an excuse to show that. >> mr. smooth. >> what about that? >> mr. smooth in atlanta? >> i was totally professional. working at cnn in atlanta behind the camera, not doing what i wanted to be doing. you have to know at some point it's not going to happen here. >> yeah. >> i picked myself up and moved to new york city and looked for new opportunities. you have to be able to look yourself in the mirror and say it's time to move on. it may not be comfortable but you have to pull the plug. >> that's right. al, how about you?

>> i was very fortunate. i started doing weekend weather when i was a sophomore in college. that kind of put me on that path. just transition wise, still i was worried about getting enough physical activity and i just made the decision about nine months ago, i want to bike to work. i just decided i'm going to do it. i really feel like it's made a change in my life. the days i don't do it, i miss it. i've got some sort of activity and i'm taking charge of being healthy. >> makes for a fun commute, too. >> it does. and you learn a new language. >> donny, have you been stuck? >> early on i was working for my dad. he fired me. it was actually the best thing that ever happened to me. and my dad was going to sell the company. i knew he really didn't want to, but he was like, i wasn't working out. i went to him and said, dad, don't do it. i want to come back. i want to -- taking on the responsibility of telling my dad don't sell -- like give up that opportunity. it just brought something out in me. i needed more than just doing it for me. not that i did it for him but i

needed to know i made that commitment. sometimes you have to do what i call put a stake in the ground where there's no margin of failure. that's what happened to me. the game changer for me, i was maybe afraid of having children. i had them later in life. it's been the greatest joy. the very thing sometimes you're most afraid at gives you the most reward. i've gotten more pleasure and i think i'm better at that than anything. walk right into what you're afraid of. the irony is that it's probably what you'll be best at. >> deemed the better late than never club. >> bltn club. stick around, donny. you'll give some budding entrepreneurs some advice. before that, natalie has a look at the headlines. danger from outer space when a ten-ton meteorite streaked across the sky and landed in a remote part of russia, 90 miles east of russia. injured some 500 people there, causing shockwaves. it is not related, experts say,

>> i'm a 34-year-old single lady living in las vegas. i teach physical education. my wardrobe is sweat pants, sweat shirt and pony tail every day. this is my closet. these ones i wear for working out every morning i got these in 1997. we've got the turkey trot 5k together, the really, really ugly sweat shirt that i threw away. i've got four or five of these beautiful turkey trot shirts. i don't think my style has changed too much from high school. help me. i'm stuck. >> all right, darcy. we're ready to see you. come on out, girl. show us what you've got. all right. this is darcy before. look at her now. oh, my gosh. she was hiding this body under those sweats. >> amazing. >> that is crazy. let's start with you. >> she looks -- >> what did you do? >> incredible. first of all darcy said she only

worn a dress a handful of times. when we found out this body was hiding under those t-shirts and jeans, we wanted to show it off. the tip here is really look for one of your best assets. for darcy, it's her waist. it is teeny tiny. we chose this dress because it has a fit and flare capability. this is kind of like everybody looks good in this dress, right? >> yeah. absolutely. >> yeah. >> wide belt. >> my waist is not that good but yeah. >> details putting it all together. we wanted to add some pops of color. everybody needs that little black dress. we gave her a pop around the belt to again accentuate that and threw a little leopard print pump on there. because it elevates the look. i think this is something that darcy will get a lot of use out of. at the end of the day we want darcy to be happy. >> you look great. all right harry, what did you do? >> you know what, she is a gym teacher and i took that in consideration when coming up with a look. i wanted something that was not just for today but her life. the fact that she's going to

wear her hair in a pony tail every day, the bangs were a perfect thing for her to do to bring her look to a total modern 2013 look. we darkened the hair color. her eyes are beautiful and blue and that kind of -- she never colored it before. i thought it gave her a nice dramatic -- look at the shine. >> beautiful. >> high shine. another head of hair. >> malley, what did you do to give her a glam look? >> the same thing. she is a gym teacher. we are not going to turn her into rupaul. we want to keep her with her lifestyle. so again, really she has gorgeous skin. about lifting her eyes. she lacked definition in the face. great eyeliner, mascara to lift and open the eyes keeping her looking like her, a little blush. that's all you need. >> darcy, going to throw out

in my home. growing a little bit at a time while i'm still in culinary school i decided to take some classes at the community college in their program to learn more about the business. where i would like it to go is brick and mortar and for it to become my full-time job. >> you do a little bit of everything, party planning, baking? >> event planning as well. >> first impression? >> firstly, you've done the hard part. you are a road map to take that first step. while you have your current job, start to take one foot in is the hard thing, that's number one. number two, you're doing what you're passionate about, which i love. so my advice to you is every place you go now, every party you have, every -- even the customers who are at the party, say, hey, here's my card. everybody, every musician that's there, gv them your card and say, oh, by the way, i'll give you 10% of everybody you send to

me. make everybody around you ambassadors. don't be shy with friends and family. let everybody know this is what i'm doing. the great news is that you've done the hard part. i want to say to everybody at home you don't have to blow up your life. you can basically keep your current job, if you're a full-time mom you don't have to give that up. just an hour aweek, two hours a week, start. you'll be amazed what happens. >> you're working a ton of hours, francis, a banking job and now this side project. how do you manage it all? >> i just work a ton. i work 40 hours a week as a manager at one of our local banks and pretty much from the time i get home until i go to bed i kind of balance it all and get it done and shoot weddings on the weekends. >> is this a case of you not loving the job you're in or more just wanting to branch out and doing is that you're truly passionate about? >> i absolutely love the job i'm in. i would love to do this full time. i have been extremely grateful to have a fantastic team i work with at the bank that's been super supportive. i just would love to be more of

a creative outlet and do that full time. >> what's the point at which frances should make the leap full time? >> you say i work all night long. you probably can't home to do it. the answer is when you do it -- there's no one answer when you are making 50% or 60% as much. when you follow your gut and see, okay, now i've done 50 clients with photography, next you're you'll do 100. my rule of thumb is wops you're somewhere between half and 60% of the income you're making from your regular job, it's just going to get better. i want everybody to look at her face at home. she's now working 80 hours a week, but she's loving it. if it's what you love, it's not work anymore. just do it, man. >> darlene, did you learn anything from donny you'll use as soon as you get back? >> it's encouraging to know i have my foot in the door. >> you've done the hard part. let's go! >> coach donny, giving the

mail or something that's more business like than your aol address from when maybe you were a teenager. for toni, i'm recommending a skill-based resume for you, which is something that a lot of women have taken time off and done a lot of volunteer -- if you've gotten great experience and you want to list it in a way that lists your accomplishments, maybe not a chronological resume, which is the typical, but a nice, professional profile, talking about why somebody should hire you based on the skills you've acquired. >> and skills that could transfer as well. >> absolutely. >> it's not just what you know but it is really who you know? >> yes. 80% of jobs are gotten through networking. that's a really high number. you really want to mind those important things like your alumni associations are fabulous. a lot of colleges and universities are really working toward helping alumni get jobs. definitely go back, meet with alumni, interviews and professional associations as well. i know you're a member of some.
